What an SEO audit should include

Some audits are a 100-page PDF of automated warnings. Others are a useful list of what to fix first. Here's how to tell the difference before you pay.

An audit answers three questions

  1. Can Google find and read your pages?
  2. Do your pages match what people search for?
  3. What should you do first?

If a report doesn't answer the third question, it's a data dump.

1. Crawling and indexing

A good audit shows which pages Google can reach, which it has stored, and which it can't or won't. Look for sections on blocked pages, error pages, redirects, duplicate pages and sitemaps. It should explain each problem and say how many pages it affects.

2. Site speed and mobile use

Most people visit on a phone. The audit should show how your key pages perform there, which parts are slow and why. Look for specifics: "this image is 4 MB", not "improve your speed".

3. On-page basics

Titles, headings, descriptions and copy on your most important pages, set against what people search for. Does each page have a clear purpose? Do two pages compete for the same search?

4. Content and structure

Are there pages that should exist and don't? Are some thin or repeated? Does the site's menu and linking show Google what matters most?

5. Local and AI visibility

For local businesses, the state of the Google Business Profile and listings. For all, whether your business is described clearly enough that search and AI systems could cite it. We cover the second half in getting cited by AI search.

6. A prioritised plan

This is the part that matters. Every finding should have a plain-English explanation, a rough effort, a rough impact and a place in the order. You should be able to hand it to a developer, or act on it yourself.

Warning signs

  • No price until after a "discovery call".
  • A report that is mostly automated output with no explanation.
  • Promises of rankings or traffic.
  • Everything marked "critical".
  • No mention of what it did not look at.
